The henna plant transcends time, religion and culture and has been used as a skin and hair dye for thousands of years. Researchers have found that ancient Egyptians dyed their fingernails, and the Romans dyed their hair with henna. In many Muslim countries, palms of the hands and soles of the feet are decorated for celebrations like Eid al Fitr, Eid al Adha and marriage ceremonies. Beards are dyed as part of Islamic traditions and henna is used in wedding ceremonies in India, Pakistan, Egypt, Malaysia and by Jewish communities in Morocco. Join Kingston staff and students reflecting on the ancient plant and get a hand design by Imaan Khan. Booking is essential for this free event and each slot for henna application will be 5 minutes. Please arrive 15 minutes prior to your slot for us to carry out a patch test. The Henna and Hang event forms part of Faith Fayre 2025 and Kingston’s Cultural Diversity programme.
